Islands of Polynesia
Information about the island nations,
territories, and island groups in
the South Pacific region known as Polynesia.
Polynesia is a triangular area with corners at Hawaii in the north, New Zealand in the west and Easter Island in the east. It includes Christmas Island, Cook Islands, Easter Island French Polynesia Hawaiian Islands, Marquesas Islands, Niue the Pitcairn Islands Samoa (formerly Western Samoa) the Society Islands, American Samoa Tokelau, Tonga Tuamotu Islands, Tuvalu and the Wallis and Futuna Islands
Popular visitor destinations in Polynesia include Tahiti Island, Moorea Island and Bora Bora Island, Rapa Nui, Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Tongatapu, Vavau, Tutuila Island, Upolu, and Savaii.
Term originally used by Charles de Brosses in 1756 to refer to all of the islands in the Pacific Ocean. In 1831 Dumont d'Urville began using it to refer only to a section of the Pacific
