Palau Shark Sanctuary
Shark preserve created in November 2001 to end shark-finning in the waters off Palau. Shark finning is the practice of capturing sharks, removing their fins, and throwing them back in the water, where they eventually die because they cannot swim without their fins. This practice has persisted because shark fins can be sold for shark fin soup and traditional medicines.
