Kiribati Independence from the United Kingdom
The British territory known as the "Gilbert Islands, Banaba, the Phoenix and the Line Islands" became the "Independent and Sovereign Republic of Kiribati" in 1970.

Kiribati Moved the International Date Line
On January 1, 1995 Kiribati moved the International date line to include its most easterly islands so it would always be the same day throughout the entire countyr.
