Heard Island and McDonald Islands

Information about Heard Island and the McDonald Islands, a nature preserve and group of islands in the South Indian Ocean that is a territory of Australia.

This group of barren, uninhabited, sub-Antarctic islands are located in the Indian Ocean, about two thirds of the way between the island of Madagasgar and the Antarctic. Heard Island and the McDonald Islands were transferred from the United Kingdom to Australia in 1947. The islands have large seal and bird popultions and to protect those populations the islands have been designated a nature preserve.
